This summer, I went to a birthday party for my friend Rachel Goldstein. Rachel is the founder of Agent of Change (event and marketing agency) and a superconnector in the wellness and personal development space.

When I arrived at the party, I was delighted to find a gourmet feast—mountains of organic food, including dips, veggie burgers, chocolate covered strawberries, and gluten-free cupcakes.

Everything about the event was impressive, but what stood out most to me was the people in the room.

The party was organized pretty last minute and was in upstate New York, yet it was a full house. Celebrity doctors and yoga instructors, leading media entrepreneurs, and wellness/personal development experts filled the room. People from across the country flew in, just to be there for Rachel on her special day.

It was a great reminder of the power of relationships, because, in my eyes, there is nothing more important than that. It is the ultimate manifestation of wealth and abundance.

The truth is that the greatest opportunities we get in life happen through relationships, so knowing the right way to build relationships is one of the greatest assets an entrepreneur can have.

Think about it—whether it’s that dream client you want or the high-profile press coverage you know you deserve, there is a decision-maker who has to believe in you in order to give you that opportunity.

The big opportunities I’ve gotten in my first year of business—like getting featured on Huffington Post LIVE and Glamour.com, writing for Positively Positive and Forbes.com, and receiving endorsements from people like Danielle LaPorte and Marie Forleo—are all results of the relationships I have thoughtfully built.

Some questions for you to think about

  •  What are the big opportunities you want?
  • Who are the superconnectors who can introduce you to the people you most need to know?
  • Who are the new people you want to meet, and what are the existing relationships you want to cultivate?

You can probably think of several influential people that it would be amazing to have in your network, cheering you on and opening up doors for you. So how do you go about building a relationship with them?

It’s super important that you go about this the right way. Most people are doing this part of the equation ALL wrong, which leads to damaging relationships and missed opportunities.
