You know one of the things I hear so often from people who are looking to change their lives is…”Hayley I would love to have the passion and lifestyle that you have, but I don’t think I could ever ‘sell’ anything.”
That statement always shocks me for a number of reasons.
One is I don’t know why people sell (no pun intended) themselves so short all the time. Why do you think we so often start off a statement with the words…”I could never do that…”
How does that make you feel when you say out loud, “I could never …”? Do you even know why you’re saying you don’t think you can do something? Where is that thought coming from? Again, how does it make you feel when you say that? Is it empowering to you or does it make you feel unworthy?
If you just give yourself a chance to trying something, give it a go…you actually may surprise yourself, right? And if you don’t give something a go, then you SURELY will never know if you can do it. So, even if it seems so impossible to you and way outside your comfort zone, why NOT go for it? Essentially, you are only dealing with thoughts and you can simply choose different thoughts.
In any case the main reason why that statement confuses me so much, is the perception part. People see life from so many different perspectives. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying anyone is seeing the world the wrong way, but I am simply suggesting that we need to stop ourselves at times and watch. And listen. And ask ourselves questions.
You see we get stuck in a habitual way of thinking which can seriously limit us. @hayleyhobson (Click to Tweet!)
This means, we need to stop ourselves right there, dead in our thoughts (quite often) and try to be consciously aware of what we are really thinking. Then we can start to question why we are thinking that way.
When we do that, we give ourselves a choice. We can ask ourselves, do I want to keep thinking in a way which is making me feel second best or not good enough, or would I prefer to change my thought process and choose thoughts that empower me and make me feel worthy. Because you don’t really believe you are unworthy, do you?
You see I don’t see myself as having to sell anything in my business. I see myself as serving others. Helping provide other people with a solution to their problem. A solution which they are looking for! I see myself and what I do as investing in other women so they can become better parents, wives, better neighbors and leaders in the community. That to me doesn’t seem like selling at all. But that’s just MY thought. 😉
It always amazes me how different humans can see the same situation and create a different “reality” of that situation based on our thoughts.
So here a few tips for you to help you change your perception and create a new reality with your thoughts:
Become aware – The first step is just becoming aware of your thoughts. Try not to see them as negative or positive thoughts, just notice the different thoughts you have in different situations and how they make you feel. Do they make you feel good or not so good.
Learn to feel – When we become aware of our thoughts we can also become more aware of the way that we feel. In our society we have been taught to anesthetize ourselves from negative feelings. You guys, its OK to feel! That is what will tell us what we’re thinking. This will help to guide us on what type of thoughts we are having and how we need to change our thoughts in order to feel the way we want to.
Break the thought habit – When we are aware of our thoughts and the way we feel, we then allow ourselves to be free of our habitual way of thinking and see things differently. It gives us the choice to now say…”Why was I thinking that way?” “How did that make me feel?” “Is there a different way to see this?”
Set yourself a challenge – Challenge yourself to go look for situations or events which you perceive to be not in alignment with the way you see yourself. For example a type of career, a certain skill such as public speaking, or a hobby or activity that you would love to do, but don’t think you’re “made” for that. Challenge yourself to go there and be completely open and try see a different perspective to that “thing”.
Speak up – Remember, You TOO have a voice. And someone would be very thankful to hear your story. Why aren’t you sharing?
Release the judgement – If you think you need change but you’re not good enough or cut out for a particular type of business, go meet up with someone in that field who does well. Sit with them and let them share their perspective with you. Again prepare yourself by being aware of your thoughts, the way that you feel and break that old habitual way of thinking.
When you do these things and bring them into your life, the entire way you see life, people and situations will completely change. It changed everything for me, when I did this in my life. It was like a dark veil had been lifted from my eyes.
