Just be yourself.

You’ve probably heard this piece of advice more times than you can count, but what does it actually mean to you?

In a world that is constantly selling you ideas of who and how you should be, it can be confusing to figure out who you really are.

It is sometimes assumed that with age you will eventually come to know yourself. In my experience, this is not necessarily true. As a therapist, I have treated clients in their 50’s and 60’s, who were still playing out unresolved injuries from the past, seeking validation and mirroring from others to give them their identity. Knowing and honoring your truest self is an inside job that no one else can do for you. If you want to understand yourself, you have to dive in and really look at your life, choices, history etc. This can be uncomfortable and won’t just magically happen on it’s own. You must consciously make room in your life for this kind of  self reflection on a regular basis.

“Stepping out of your comfort zone can feel really scary, but it’s so, so worth it.” – Christine Hassler
