Love this…I just started blogging on how our emotions can be so attached to our dogs and will continue to address in future posts how just because a dog isn’t doing what we expect does not mean it is his fault…sometimes we need to keep searching for new ways to successfully communicate what we want or figure out what they need through trial and error rather than giving up or chalking it up to, “oh he’s difficult.”

What a touching article.   I just got a chihuahua.  He’s only seven months old.   I have never had a puppy before.  I only had dogs when I was younger.  I never knew you could love an animal as much as I love him !!!!  I think about him most of the day while I’m at work – and can hardly wait to get home to him !!!!   If you can’t love an animal – then please allow someone else to love them !!!

This was touching to me.  It also made me feel guilty because we are taking a trip that we cannot bring our pup with us.  Believe me, I try to bring her every where we can with us but this trip she won’t be able to go with.  I don’t want her to feel abandoned and before I read this I already had that fear. Yes, our dog is part of our family and we make sure her needs are always met but we actually take a vacation that she can’t come along we can’t help but feel guilty.  That is why we rarely take them.  Its a good thing I look at many different over-nite kennels and bring her along to get a “feel” to see if she will be happy or not…she is such a wonderful asset to our family.  She has been such a blessing to our family.  

I wish you would have added that it’s just not ok to steal them away from their owners/homes…. it’s just as hard for them as it is for the family that lost them.

I am craying to read this because any day now my beloved Ginger, my children’s best friend will leave us. She is a 14 year old pitbull full of so much love, but now her energy is gone,  her legs hurt, and the pain meds are not working. I hate to see her suffering, yet I cannot bring myself to put her to sleep…it hurts to the bone!

I’m crying. My dog Zsa Zsa is a 5 year old yellow lab who has been with me through thick and thin. She is my familiar (as a witch, she’s sort of like a spiritual companion and guide) and she is like a daughter to me. My mom’s dog General has been my best friend for 13 years and my brother’s dog Cortana has been like a fun niece that I get to spoil from time to time. And just a couple of days a go my husband and I opened our home to 1 year old Bentley who is currently cuddled up at my side.

I don’t know what I would do without my dogs, especially Zsa Zsa who is just as much a part of my heart as my son is. They are truly the best friends I could ever ask for and I can only hope to be half as amazing of a person as they think I am.

I lost my beloved Shihtzu, Sassy, last year from lymphoma.  We had to put her to sleep.  I couldn’t be there that day, but I held her and told her she was going to play with the angels and that mommy loved her and would never forget her as long as I lived.  She was my best friend that I told everything to, and understood everything.  She even understood the day we found out that she had lymphoma, and I told her I would do everything to help her get better, and I did.  I read her a book about the rainbow bridge everyday and explained that she was my forever dog and she would never leave me and we would be together again.  I told her everyday for 4 months that when she went with the angels, to let her mommy know that she was happy and ok.  Nine months later I got a sign from her.  In terrible weather, a little shihtzu was running in a bunch of traffic.  This dog looked exactly like my Sassy.  We stopped and put her in my car and I took her to PAWS to be claimed by an owner.  She was in terrible shape and missing an eye and filled with stickers and severely matted.  PAWS staff told me to name her and I said no.  The man working said, “I know, let’s name her Sassy.”  I started to cry and had to leave her there for 7 days to see if someone would claim her.  They never did.  As soon as PAWS opened that day, I went and adopted her.  She too, looks at me with love and is so much like Sassy it is unbelievable.  She cuddles with me and I know that I mean the world to her.  I sing songs to her when it is thundering and lightening and she is scared, and I hold her like a baby and tell her all my problems and concerns in life.  She understands.  I know that Sassy was looking from above and put Molly in front of my car that day.  There was no coincidence here, just my Sassy looking from above and placing us together until the day comes that Molly goes to the rainbow bridge.  Thank you Sassy for your special gift!

my issue is #10.  i had a dog Max that had survived 3 bear attacks on the fourth attack he was not going to pull through. having no money to put him down i had to pull the trigger. was one of the most difficult things i ever had to do. that was many years ago and even while typing this im crying. i cant tell you if not being there is better or not. but i can tell you that being present and responsible for the death of a pet and best friend is one of the most painful things i have been through at this time.

Know when its time to say goodbye. If the dog is in such pain and you keep him alive, you are doing him a disservice. 

I saw this the first time soon after I had accompanied by best friend Tubby on his last trip to the vet. They were kind, caring and helped both of us through a difficult, difficult time. We lasted three weeks before adopting another shelter dog, two months later we adopted another one. They are the sweetest, most joyful part of my day and I try to be the mom to them as outlined in your post.

Eric – your blog post made me cry. It’s so true. I had to put my kitty to sleep after 18 years together on September 29th of 2011. She was sick and had had a good quality of life with frequent vet visits, and shots and medicated baths. But, it got to the point when it was apparent that she just never felt good, and I could not justify keeping her alive and in pain just because I didn’t want to let her go. I was kind of curled up around her when she got her injections, whispering in her ear. She passed so quickly, within seconds, it seemed, I picked up her little body and she was already completely limp and I became so distraught that I started sobbing.

I miss her so much. Sometimes it seems as though I hear her walking around the apartment or jumping up on the sofa. When she died, a part of me died, too.

i justs got a puppy, well she’s 5 months old, and i cant stand not being with her in ~15 years. When i go off to college, no one will be home to watch her: my sister just went off to dorm at college, I will leave next year, my mom and dad work from 5 in the morning and come back home at night. So when I leave, my little cousins will be watching over her. And every summer and vacation, I will come back and come back for my little one. I dont know if this will work out of not, but I am so miserable about this situation.. for the past few days, ive been crying all day. This Article/list is so great.

I have a pitbull named Hannibel yes he is wild and tends to get over exited,but hes just a year old and his former owner used to beat him and I’m trying to train him in a more humaine way.Its tough at times and I love the dog alot,but sometimes when he goes crazy and attacks my feet or hands when I am not doing anything I just don’t know what to do..I’m not even doing anything to him and I just don’t know why he does that.When I saw this it gave me an idea of why he goes after me..now I know what I have to do and this will be one hard adventure for my “Son” and I.

Reading this made me think of my two dogs I had.
in January of 2012 my wife filed for divorced and ditched town with my daughter while leaving me with the dogs that she would later own outright because I had no choice but to move into an apartment.

I am sitting here, bawling like a baby, reading all of these posts. My animal loving parents allowed me to have any and every animal that I wanted, growing up. I had dogs, cats, horses, birds, bunnies… you name it. Loved them all and our family actually competed in who took care of them most. In our home, loving and caring for an animal was never a chore, always a joy. But my dogs always held the most tender part of my heart. One thing my father taught me and I have never forgotten and actually use for the most part in dealing with people ( and draws controversy in some conversations but do I care, um, no) is “beware of people who don’t like dogs, and beware of people whom dogs don’t like”… funny, the only people who argue with me about that are people who don’t like dogs or cat people. And, no surprise, 99% of the time, something comes up with that person which proves my father was right. And as for dogs being good judges of character, I have seen that proven, too. I am currently owned by a black and tan mini doxie, Beau. My joy, my heart and my best friend. I cannot imagine life without him. He gives me so much more than I could ever give him… I really feel my parents love thru him, long after they’ve been gone. They taught me so well, gave me so many amazing gifts to grow on but the best gift was the joy and honor and privilege of allowing a furry little friend into my life. Now excuse me, Beau is going to get another kiss and I need to redo my makeup!!!!

I’ve read this article a few time, never fails to shed a tear. I took in my Chi/Terrier mix 5 months ago from a lady who’s mother recently passed and her father could no longer care for the dog due to age and health issues. I have been setting back for the last two weeks reading all of these great stories about everyone’s best friend. I to have lost my best and my only true friend just two weeks ago to night. He was the only for sure thing in my life. He was a grand seventeen and half years old. And I had the best sixteen of those years. It’s funny after reading all of these great stories these last two weeks, I can now talk about him with out breaking down and crying, owe did I tell everyone his name, I am so sorry it is Shadow, and at the time we name him we never though it would fit him so well. He could be sound to sleep in are bedroom and the minute you open the ice box door and turned around there he was, never could figure that out because he could never hear anything else. When we got him from the pound and took him home we found out he had parvo. We call the pound all they would do was give us are twenty dollars back and put him to sleep. I am sure by now you figured out we didn’t go that rout, my wife and mom took care of him and he pull thru. And by the the way when we went to the pound that day it was to get my mom a new dog for hers had just pass away. I will always think of that as the day I won my lottery. except for the $250.00 it cost me to have all my mom’s pet treated at the vets so they wouldn’t get it,but he turn out to be worth every cent. And I would give every cent I have ever made or will ever make again just to have him back. For sixteen years he was right there to help me cook every meal and I know it was because he just want to help out.Ha! Ha!.I have to say that i am sorry for going on and on about my dog. I was thinking he mite be able to read this and know how much I miss him and both mom and I love him so much. If you can hear me Shadow know that no one will ever take your place in my heart and even though I still get up every morning thinking I need to take you out and your not there I still have to go on and it is not easy for me. But know this some day we will be back together again. And just so you know Lucky really miss you ki ki not so much but you know him he always been a little on the mean side, remember how he use to put them hear ties in your water. And jump out and rap his paws around your neck just to scare the crap out of you, he wasn’t vary funny was he. Well till we meet again don’t be sad It won’t be long you will see. This article and Joseph’s poem just made me cry. I used to be terrified of dogs up until 3 years ago. Then we got our little Muffin and he became the joy of our house. I cannot imagine life without him but realize when I read articles like this that one day he will leave us. I can’t even begin to think how my life will crumble that day. I wish these little guys could physically stay with us forever. I am so lucky to have found him all the way in Tennessee (we live in Chicago and as crazy as it sounds we drove all the way to TN to pick him up because the thought of him being shipped to us in cargo made me sick). I fall in love with him more and more everyday. I used to think dog owners were crazy, I thought “really, they are just dogs” turns out I was wrong. They are definitely way more than just dogs! They teach us all the good things in life, most importantly unconditional love, patience and friendship. I talk to him and thank him everyday, I know he understands.

I can’t even begin to say how powerful this is. Especially for me a disabeled veteran with a service animal. I am often humiliated in public places although I identify her as a service animal. When I become inpatient with her I always apoligize. I have PTSD and and LUPUS-an Autoimmune Disease and it lead to Severe Migraines and Asthma and Lung Disease from My exposure to Desert Storm. Right now I am desperately trying to find funding to move to TN from Tx and am supposed to move out of my home (being forced to am face homelessness) nice right? if I do not in the next week.

Dogs are beautiful creature both by looks and by their character. Once they put their trust in you they’ll be loyal to you until their death. We might think it would be very difficult for us to part with our dog. But, it is even more difficult for the dog to part with us. read more here

I hope you get a new dog soon. I think that’s awful that your dog Stella died a year ago. I have a dog that is going to die soon because my dad ante there to feed him. I don’t know if my Nana has him at her house or not. I don’t live at my dads house any more. I am staying with my aunt, and uncle. I miss my dad so much. I am sorry that your dog died. I love my dog very much and I am not ready for him to die.
