What’s your bad habit?

You know, the one you can’t shake?

It might be something as simple as leaving the overnight porch lights on each morning when you go to work. It’s not disastrous, but it’s annoying, especially because you can’t figure out why you keep doing it.

Why can’t you stop?

More importantly, how can tapping help?

Bad Habits: What’s Really Going on Underneath

Of course, you can start tapping on your bad habits right away, but there’s something you might want to consider before you begin.

One of the reasons bad habits persist is because we tend to see them as the least of our problems. You have bigger fish to fry, major life issues to handle, and so your bad habit likely resides at the bottom of your list of things to deal with.

Fair enough.

Here’s what you might not realize: Your bad habit is likely a persistent and telling symptom of a bigger problem you’re dealing with, one that might actually be at the root of some of the larger things you’re struggling with.

For example:

  • Biting your fingernails is often a symptom of nervousness and anxiety.
  • If you’re always running late, there’s a strong possibility you’re very disorganized.
  • Do you overspend? You might be compensating for some form of emotional need.

The list goes on and on.

Mind you, these aren’t definite correlations, but thinking from this perspective does present you with an opportunity to investigate the root cause of your frustrating habit.

Better yet, you not only have a chance to get rid of that nagging bad habit for good, but also to heal a deeper wound that you might not even be aware of.

A Tapping Routine to Get to the Root of Your Bad Habit

If you haven’t tried tapping before, check out this short video to learn how. You’ll have it figured out in just a few minutes.

You can use this routine at any time, but it’s best to give it a go right after you’ve committed whatever act you’re trying to shake. Better yet, see if you can catch yourself before the deed is done.

Start by tapping on your karate chop point, and say these phrases:

  • “Even though I can’t stop [say your bad habit here], I completely love and accept myself.”
  • “Even though it feels more powerful than me, I completely love and accept myself.”
  • “Even though it feels like I’ve been doing this forever, I completely love and accept myself.”

Eyebrow: “I hate this bad habit of mine.”
Side of eye: “Why do I keep doing this?”
Under eye: “Am I really so weak that I can’t stop?”
Under nose: “Why can’t I stop [name your habit]?”
Chin point: “I don’t even realize when I’m doing it.”
Collarbone: “It’s so embarrassing. I’m so useless.”
Under arm: “How can I expect to accomplish anything if I can’t stop doing this?”
Top of head: “There’s nothing I can do to shake this.”

Take a deep breath, and check in with how you’re feeling. How intense is your frustration? Did any other feelings or thoughts come up?

Now, we’re going to go a little deeper. Start again at your eyebrow, and say these phrases.

Eyebrow: “I know I can figure this out.”
Side of eye: “There has to be some deeper reason why I’m always [name your habit]?”
Under eye: “I can get rid of this for good!”
Under nose: “No I can’t. I’m not strong enough to stop doing it.”
Chin point: “Yes I am. I can stop this once and for all.”
Collarbone: “Not only that, I can figure out why it’s been happening for so long.”
Under arm: “I give myself permission to trust my higher self. I do know why I’m doing this.”
Top of head: “I can stop [name your habit] forever once I understand the cause.”

Check in with yourself again and take note of what came up. Write it down if you have to. You’ll probably find it useful to repeat this last sequence again, maybe even a few times, adding any realizations as they come to you.

Remember, your bad habits have become embedded patterns in your body and psyche over time, and it might take some time to work them back out. As such, be sure to take a few minutes to repeat this routine every time you find them popping up.

With time, you’ll be able to shed your bad habits for good, and hopefully free yourself from whatever was causing them in the first place.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll be amazed at how many good habits you have waiting in the wings to take their place.
