The majority of Americans are unhappy at work, (53% according to Forbes, 10 Shocking Workplace Stats You Need to Know).

So, why do so many people stay in a job when they aren’t happy? Because they feel stuck.

Stuck with their degree

Stuck in their pay scale.

Stuck in their comfort zone.

Stuck in their job.

When you’re stuck, you feel like there is no way out of the situation. But, at just 17 years old, I learned this wasn’t true.

It was the summer of ‘95 and I was on a three week camping trip out West. One early morning we pulled into our parking space for a long hike up a mountain. My stomach filled with butterflies when I looked at that mountain. It felt impossible.

But, I was on a school trip and, literally, could not back out. I had to find a way to make it up that mountain. It was terrifying to look up at it so, instead, I decided to look straight ahead and talk with my friends. One step after another we walked along the path and, before I knew it, the hours had evaporated and we were enjoying the view from the top of the mountain.

So many people complain about their jobs, but struggle to make a change.

Whether you want a new job or to launch a business, ignore the looming mountain and focus on the immediate path before you.

What steps can you take today toward your dream life?

Stuck with your degree? In today’s world, that physical degree is losing its importance. There are so many other educational opportunities available at the click of a mouse, many of which are free! Start researching what options are available to you.

Stuck in your pay scale? Start researching how you can earn more money: do other companies pay more, could you freelance, etc. If you find all companies pay the same, then you may be maxed out at your current level and need to brainstorm about how you can get a promotion.

Stuck in your comfort zone? This answer really just calls for some tough love. No one can force you out of your comfort zone. It’s time to decide for yourself if your fear of regret outweighs your fear of change. If it does, then you just need to do it. You are the only one that has the power to change your situation.

Stuck in your job? Start making NEW connections. You can meet people online (LinkedIn is great for professionals) or start attending local networking events. You will be amazed at the opportunities that present themselves when you expand your network. If you discover your entrepreneurial spirit is screaming to get out, then stop living under your excuses and start mapping out your initial steps for the business. Trust me, there is a lot to look into before you financially commit to launching a business.

By taking the steps on the immediate path before you, you can start making progress toward your dream life today.
